The Internationaler Bund (IB) joins the demands of the Association of German Development and Humanitarian Organisations (VENRO) on the war in Ukraine. In a statement, VENRO expresses clear expectations of several actors. The IB is an active member of the association.
Among others, the Russian government should ensure the protection of civilians during combat operations and provide serious escape corridors. In addition, the association calls on the traffic light coalition in Germany to include special funds for Ukraine in the budget. However, these should not be at the expense of the remaining funds for development cooperation and should also be available on a flexible basis.
The neighboring states of Ukraine as well as the EU are called upon to keep their borders open for refugees and to ensure their protection. In particular, the situation of women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities must be kept in mind. Ukrainian actors should be involved in humanitarian aid. "The situation in Ukraine remains unbearable and the biggest tragedy after World War II in Europe. The civilian population is suffering, evacuation is progressing slowly. Those who had to flee the country to save their lives must now be helped quickly. In our view, the German government and the EU are also called upon to do this. Therefore, we join the VENRO demands," explains Thiemo Fojkar, Chairman of the IB.
