World Children's Day was established in 1954 as a universal children's day and is celebrated every year on November 20 by the United Nations in order to promote international cooperation, raise awareness among children worldwide and improve the well-being of children. November 20 is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, World Children's Day also marks the anniversary of the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
"Today, on World Children's Day, the IB would like to recall that the COVID 19 crisis has led to a crisis of children's rights in the world. The cost of the pandemic to children is immediate and, if not addressed, can last a lifetime”, explains Karola Becker, member of the IB Executive Board.
